Dr. Mulokozi Lugakingira understands that some people get a little nervous when it comes time to visit a dental surgeon or other professional for matters involving treatment of the teeth and mouth. At Fort Wayne Oral Maxillofacial Surgery & Implant Center, our goal is to make your visit as relaxing as possible, which is why we offer several types of sedation dentistry to help patients with dental anxiety have a smoother, calmer experience.

Benefits of Sedation

It is not just children who get a little nervous when it comes to a dental visit. If you or a member of your family start to get sweaty, chills, increased heart rate, or feelings of panic that grow as your visit approaches, you could suffer from dental anxiety. This can sometimes cause patients to act unpredictably, so for the safety of our patients and our professionals, we offer sedation to help get through the visit. There are four main types we offer at our practice:

  1. Local Anesthetic: Dr. Lugakingira may offer a local anesthetic to numb the area of the mouth we will be working in. The local anesthetic is applied with a syringe, and the numbness typically wears off after a few hours.
  2. I.V.: I.V. sedation is when we administer a sedative directly into the bloodstream. If you suffer from severe anxiety, this method can help you feel as though you were asleep for the whole procedure. This is more likely to be used for more complex treatments such as surgeries.
  3. Oral: We can also give some patients a pill to take an hour before their appointment. This relaxes the patient for the procedure,
  4. Nitrous Oxide: Sometimes referred to as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is administered by letting the patient inhale it through a face mask. This calms the patient down. There are no side effects or extra preparation required.
