If you’re someone who doesn’t enjoy trips to the dentist and feel you need something to help calm you down, you’ll be pleased to know sedation dentistry can go a long way in relieving your nerves while taking the best care of your oral health at the same time. No longer do you have to avoid going to Dr. Cervenka because of your apprehension; we’re here to help do our part to ease your fears.

Sleep Dentistry

Simply put, sedation dentistry is a method of helping patients relax while in the dentist’s chair. Just as there are several different levels of anxiety about dentists, there are several different levels of sedation dentistry. For instance, with minimal sedation, you’ll be conscious during your procedure, but you’ll also be relaxed. There’s also moderate sedation, in which you’ll be put under a bit more than minimal sedation and you won’t remember what happened during your procedure. Third, there’s deep sedation, in which you’ll be put in a sleep-like state, but it will be easy for you to wake up. And finally, general anesthesia involves you being fully unconscious.

Types of Sedation

Now that you know a bit more about the different levels of sedation, we’d like to tell you a bit more about the different types of sedation, which is the way the sedation is introduced to your system. Sedation can be administered orally in the form of a pill. You can also inhale nitrous oxide through a mask wherein the amount of gas you receive is altered according to your specific needs.

If you’d like the sedation to work as quickly as possible, you can receive IV sedation, which requires introducing medication through a vein. In addition to receiving sedation, you’re likely to receive a local anesthesia to numb the operation area so you only have a minimum of pain.
