Types of Sedation

If you are a white-knuckle patient, holding rigidly to the arms of the dental chair throughout a procedure, you might be a candidate for sedation dentistry. Many dentists and periodontists can offer minor sedation through inhalation (nitrous oxide) or orally (swallowing a pill).

However, IV sedation is a more complex technique and can be administered only by certified practitioners such as Dr. Tokarczyk. He administers medication through an IV; it does not put you to sleep unless you are also under general anesthesia.

Good Candidates

IV sedation works quickly and is suitable for just about any patient. You will be able to respond to questions, but you will not have a sharp awareness. Another plus to IV sedation is that it is adjustable to each patient’s needs.

Who is a good candidate for sedation? Along with those who have fear or anxiety, it may be right for:

  • Those with a low tolerance for pain
  • Fidgeters who have a hard time being still
  • Anyone who has overly sensitive teeth
  • Those with strong gag reflexes
  • Someone undergoing several or long procedures
