How It Works 

There are several sedation techniques that can be used to help you calm down before and during dental appointments. Dr. Patrick Peters is a respected dentist in Frankfort, KY, who offers the following types of sedation dentistry at his practice:

  • Nitrous oxide
  • Local anesthetic
  • Oral sedation
  • IV sedation

Nitrous oxide is frequently used to reduce dental anxiety. The safe, odorless gas is administered through a mask that covers the nose and mouth. Within moments of inhaling the gas, you’ll start to feel relaxed. Once the procedure is complete and the gas is turned off, you’ll quickly return to normal.

Local anesthetic can numb specific areas of the mouth that will receive treatment. It is administered via a needle and does not require sedation. Effects of local anesthesia typically wear off within a few hours.

Oral sedation is delivered orally in pill format. It is intended to be taken before the dental appointment begins and can help you feel relaxed throughout treatment. The effects of oral sedation can last for a few hours, so it’s important to have someone drive you to and from your appointment.

IV sedation is reserved for the most severe instances of dental anxiety or for more invasive procedures (including oral surgery and gum grafting). It is administered intravenously, and you’ll be monitored by an anesthesiologist throughout the procedure. You’ll need someone to drive you home after your appointment is over.
