Types of Sedation

Dr. Steele is an accomplished oral surgeon who has a great deal of compassion for patients with dental anxiety. To ensure that you feel as comfortable as possible while receiving the care you need, he offers several different types of sedation dentistry:

• Intravenous (IV) sedation
• Oral sedation
• Nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”)

These safe and effective sedation methods give Dr. Steele the ability to administer three different levels of sedation: deep, moderate and minimal. Deep sedation is only administered to patients who are undergoing complicated, invasive procedures or who have severe anxiety. Patients under deep sedation are typically in a sleep state but can still be awakened as needed. Moderate sedation is commonly administered to patients with moderate to severe anxiety. It allows them to respond to stimuli and directions, but most patients don’t remember anything about the procedure once the sedation wears off. Minimal sedation in the form of nitrous oxide is one of the most popular types. It allows the patient to remain awake during the procedure, but induces feelings of relaxation and even euphoria.
