It is common for individuals to be nervous about receiving treatment for their dental needs, but in some cases dental anxiety can become crippling. If you need cosmetic dentistry or other prosthodontic procedures, but you suffer from severe levels of anxiety, dental sedation may be the answer to your fears. Dr. William Gielincki knows how difficult it can be to receive necessary dental treatments when you are overcome by anxiety, which is why he is proud to be a prosthodontist in Jacksonville, FL, who offers patients the opportunity to receive sedation dentistry.

Are Sedatives Safe?

The sedatives used in Dr. Gielincki’s office are completely safe, and you will be closely monitored while under the influence of sedatives to ensure that your vitals remain in the normal range. Depending on the severity of your anxiety, Dr. Gielincki may recommend that you take oral sedatives prior to your appointment, or he may recommend that they be taken during your appointment.

Dental sedation works by temporarily depressing the portion of your central nervous system that is responsible for your conscious awareness. Once the sedatives have taken effect, your anxiety will markedly decrease and you will feel more relaxed and comfortable while receiving treatment. Depending on the type and amount of sedatives given, you may enter into a minimal level of relaxation, or you may be placed under deep sedation.

How Long Do Sedatives Last?

Most sedatives are designed to wear off soon after your appointment is finished. However, it is likely that you will need to have someone come with you to drive you home until the effects of the sedatives have had time to wear off completely, especially if you are placed under deep sedation. Dr. Gielincki or a member of his staff will let you know if you should plan to have someone escort you home after your appointment. Call 904-688-5291 to schedule your sedation dentistry appointment today!
