How Sedation Dentistry Can Help You Have a Pleasant Dental Experience

Dental anxiety is a powerful condition that can make it difficult to receive regular dental care. Many people – kids and adults alike – avoid visiting the dentist because they experience high levels of fear during appointments. Dr. Mitchel Senft encourages patients with dental fear to ask about the sedation options he offers at his cutting-edge practice.

Local Sedation

Local sedation is the type of sedation dentistry people are most familiar with. It’s injected at or near the treatment site and numbs the nerves in the area. Once the sedative takes effect, you’ll be able to receive treatment with minimal to no discomfort. It can take a few hours for the effects of the sedation to wear off, but since it’s localized, you should be able to drive yourself home without any problems.

IV Sedation

Administered intravenously, IV sedation is one of the most effective options if you have severe dental anxiety. It can be personalized to your individual needs, so if you experience a higher-than-normal level of fear, you can be given higher levels of sedation to keep you relaxed, and vice versa. IV sedation may also be recommended if you’re getting ready to receive a complicated dental procedure or if you have problems with gag reflexes. This type of sedation is highly effective and provides you with a practically painless appointment.

After your appointment, you’ll have virtually no memory of what occurred, so there will be no unpleasant memories that could contribute to future dental fear. You’ll also need to have someone take you home, since the effects of the sedation do not wear off immediately after treatment.
