Are you nervous about an upcoming dental appointment? If so, we invite you to learn about your sedation dentistry options. Receiving sedation before or during treatment is a great way to encourage feelings of calmness and relaxation while minimizing discomfort so you can have the best possible treatment experience. At Enhance Dental Care of Lawrence, we offer two different sedation options in addition to local anesthetic: nitrous oxide and oral sedation. We’ll help you choose the type that’s right for you based on your level of anxiety and the type of treatment you’re about to receive.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is a safe, odorless gas that can induce euphoric feelings and minimize pain. You may know it by its more common name, “laughing gas”. Dr. Patrick Moriarty offers this sedation option in addition to local anesthetic to help you feel as relaxed as possible during treatment. Nitrous oxide is delivered through a mask that covers your nose. The effects wear off soon after the mask is removed, so you can safely drive home after your appointment if needed.

Oral Sedation

If you have severe anxiety, oral sedation may be the best option for you. It’s administered in a pill format that you take orally about an hour before your scheduled appointment. Soon after you take it, you’ll start to feel at ease and maybe even a little sleepy. You’ll be awake and able to follow Dr. Moriarty’s instructions throughout treatment, but you’ll remain calm and relaxed. It takes a little longer for the effects of oral sedation to wear off, so you will need to arrange a ride back home after your appointment.
