Going to the dentist regularly is an important part of oral health. However, it can be difficult to make an appointment when you feel apprehensive about visiting the dentist. Anxiety is quite common. Thankfully, there are things we can do to help. Sedation dentistry in Johnson City, TN, is an excellent option if you are uneasy about visiting your dentist. Dr. Greg Moore specializes in sedation dentistry and can use it in a variety of procedures.

How Sedation Dentistry Works

Unlike general anesthesia, you will not be completely unconscious during the procedure. Rather, you will be in a very relaxed state with the ability to understand and follow basic directions (such as Dr. Moore asking you to open your mouth). There are two different kinds of sedation that may be used:

  • Nitrous oxide: A mask will be placed over your nose and mouth, and you will be told to take several deep breaths. This form of sedation is not long lasting, which can be good if you need to drive yourself to and from the procedure.
  • Oral medication: If you are given an oral medication to help you relax, you will likely need to take it 45 minutes to an hour before your procedure starts for it to take effect at the right time. You will most likely need someone who can drive you to the procedure, take you home, and stay with you for a couple hours while the medication wears off.

Depending on the level of sedation, you may not remember the procedure even after you are fully awake.
